After hearing from a friend that UGAFODE Microfinance Limited had a branch in the settlement and that they gave out loans, Nyirantezimana approached the branch in 2021 for a loan. She already had a shop, so she used the UGX 500,000 she borrowed to buy a sewing machine and add stock in her shop. She paid her loan in six months. To diversify the family income, she bought a sewing machine for her daughter who had undergone training in tailoring, but had not started working. So now they have an extra income in the household. Nyirantezimana is grateful for the little she has achieved which has given her a better life. “My life is much better than it was when I had just arrived in Uganda in 1996. I started by selling alcohol and I grew capital to invest in the shop. I am happy that the shop is supporting my family.”
